To All Hipster Hound Parents:

At Hipster Hound we are committed to providing the best foods available for your pets. We understand that the recent headlines about dog food and DCM can be alarming. We want you to know that we are here to help!

On June 27, 2019, the FDA issued an updated report on its investigation into the potential connection between diet and Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). DCM is a heart condition that causes the heart to become enlarged and unable to pump blood effectively, resulting in heart failure.

There are suspicions that grain free foods may be the cause for DCM in some dogs. The honest answer is that there hasn’t been enough research done and there isn’t currently any evidence to support this theory. It is also important to note that there have not been any recalls associated with this issue.

We certainly understand the heartbreak of losing a pet and our deepest sympathies go out to any family who has lost a family member to this disease. Please know that it is extremely rare. Since 2014, 560 dogs have been diagnosed with DCM out of 77 million dogs in the United States, that’s 0.000007%, compared to the over 6 million dogs that are diagnosed with cancer each year. We do not take this lightly. We want you to make an informed and educated decision before switching your dog’s food to a lesser quality alternative.

There are still far more unknowns to this disease and the correlation to diet than there are answers. The FDA, veterinarians and scientist agree. We do know that the DCM cases that were reported to the FDA include dogs who were fed both grain free and grain inclusive diets.

We recommend that you rotate your dogs food – alternate between protein sources and even change the brand occasionally. By doing this you are providing your dog with a complete nutrient profile over their lifetime. Feed fresh, whole foods whenever possible like raw meat, organ meats, goat milk, sardines or eggs-by doing so this adds needed supplements, like taurine, into their diet.

If you are still concerned and would like to switch your food we offer varieties that include grain/ are grain friendly and varieties that are legume and potato free. We also offer fresh, raw food and fermented goat milk which is a good source of taurine.

All of the brands we carry are 100% all natural, wheat/corn/soy free and sourced and manufactured in US, Canada or New Zealand-nothing from China. It has been stated for dogs to start eating lesser quality brands, which are full of by-products and substandard ingredients. In other terms, it would be like a human going from eating wholesome, all-natural to greasy fast food everyday.

We are pet owners ourselves and stand behind the products that we carry. We believe in the integrity of the companies that we support and feel confident in feeding all of the brands that we carry. We want you, our customers, to know that we have your pets best interest in mind and we are paying close attention to any developments that are made regarding this issue. Please feel free to read through the articles below. We are happy to help you and if you have any questions, stop by and talk with one of our staff members.
